I'm delighted to be one of the 200 artists from 16 countries contributing to Fiction (With Only Daylight Between Us) v.2, curated by Jeffrey Cortland Jones. The show is on at Corridor Projects, Ohio 2-23 Sept. The exhibition then tours to Boeckercontemporary, Heidelberg, in October. Shelf Life: Leytonstone Arts Trail

Members of xvi Artist Collective have taken over the octagonal cabinet at the centre of Leytonstone Library as part of Leytonstone Arts Trail, each generating a piece of artwork in response to a book from the collection. Choosing works that have a notable significance to each artist, there will be a small publication available to the public, with information about the books that inspired the artists.

Artists: Hannah Futers, Caro Halford, Kirsty Harris, Julia Miranda, Moorland Productions, Laurie Nouchka, Jane Oldfield, Charley Peters, Paul Stanley, Susanna Thornton, Ventiko, Jemma Watts and Sarah West.

The Preview is Thursday 4 July, 6.30-8.30pm.

The show runs 6-14 July, Mon-Fri 9am-7pm, Saturday 9am-6pm and Sunday 12-4pm.

Surface Disruptions and Colour Interference - Documenting Drawings

These photographs are part of a series documenting graphite drawings on newsprint. The delicate surface of the newsprint is distorted and creased by the act of repetitively drawing heavy graphite lines. Light acting on the metallic surface of the drawings when photographed reveals the extent of the disturbance to the paper, and the influence of the colour temperature of the light on the monochromatic drawing is also suggested in its documentation.

Exploratory drawing in sketchbook generated by systematically applying graphite powder to paper with a paintbrush, then removing layers of it with masking tape.

Continuing from recent explorations of drawing and reflected light, these photographs record the surface of four drawings in graphite on newsprint. The delicate surface of the paper is stretched and creased by repetitively drawn lines, intensely worked until the entire paper is covered with graphite. During the process of photographing the drawings, the camera records the light reflected off their surface, and the effect of the drawing process on the paper.

Current studio activity is focused around the development of small heavily worked graphite drawings onto newsprint (below). As the drawing is developed the repetitive strokes of the graphite manipulate the surface of the delicate paper causing it to ripple, line and in some cases rip. When photographed these movements in the paper surface are highlighted further due to the reflection of light from the metallic finish of the graphite. The above image shows two colour inkjet prints displayed next to each other on the studio wall.

Cut and collaged photocopies and inkjet prints used in the studio to explore composition and texture. The material was generated from photographs taken of graphite drawings, the metallic surface being represented photographically as a shiny, uneven surface, distressed and manipulated by the intense application of graphite onto the surface of newsprint, a fragile and easily disrupted drawing support.
