Surface Disruptions and Colour Interference - Documenting Drawings
These photographs are part of a series documenting graphite drawings on newsprint. The delicate surface of the newsprint is distorted and creased by the act of repetitively drawing heavy graphite lines. Light acting on the metallic surface of the drawings when photographed reveals the extent of the disturbance to the paper, and the influence of the colour temperature of the light on the monochromatic drawing is also suggested in its documentation.

Studio: Collages

Charley Peters, Untitled Collages (2012), Cut Paper
A series of studio investigations into compositional space. The collages are made from digitally drawn grey forms, which have been manipulated in Photoshop and then cut and placed by hand - combining digital and analogue processes to create fictional landscapes.

Further compositional explorations using prints and photocopies of the graphite drawings are being made on the studio wall (below).

Charley Peters, Untitled Collages (2012), Cut Paper, Photocopies & Inkjet Prints
Cut and collaged photocopies and inkjet prints used in the studio to explore composition and texture. The material was generated from photographs taken of graphite drawings, the metallic surface being represented photographically as a shiny, uneven surface, distressed and manipulated by the intense application of graphite onto the surface of newsprint, a fragile and easily disrupted drawing support.

Work in Progress: Psychoparadoxa

Charley Peters, Psychoparadoxa (2012), Card & Graphite Powder
This is an early studio development of the Psychoparadoxa series of drawings, which explore spatiality and perspective through limited, instinctively drawn lines. The geometric 3-Dimensional construction - a drawing in space - is a physical interpretation of the linear movements suggested in the earlier ink drawings (examples below). The work depicted above is a maquette that will be developed in different materials over the coming weeks, focusing on creating fluid and dynamic single forms which move away from floor-based compositions and explore the physical space inhabited in the studio.

New Drawing: Exploring Surface and Form
![]() |
Charley Peters, Untitled Drawing (2012), Graphite Powder on Paper
One of a new series of drawings exploring the use of materials, in this case graphite powder, to express density, form and dimensionality. The drawing presents a metallic textured surface that is in sharp contrast to the smooth white ground of the paper.

Studio Works 12/07/12
Charley Peters, Untitled Sketches (2012), Graphite on Paper
Preliminary works on paper which explore repetitive lines in space. The lines were then manipulated by creating additional folded lines in the paper, disrupting the drawing surface and the direction of the lines trajectory.

These digital drawings are based on a series of intuitive drawings in sketchbooks that have been developing over the past months. Taking line drawings, such as those shown below, as a starting point, layers of colour and tone are built up digitally to mimic the process of painting over and around masked areas that has been explored in the studio recently.

Studio Views: Unique Inkjet 'Drawings'
![]() |
Charley Peters, SEcretion (CMYK) (2012), Unique Inkjet Prints on Paper
Above are part of a series of 'drawings' made on an inkjet printer by scanning digitally drawn lines in cyan, magenta, yellow and black. The drawn lines are moved intuitively during the scanning process, causing movement and shifts in scale across the prints. Each colour is then printed systematically on top of the previous one, each output is unique and produced by chance.

Charley Peters, Untitled Drawings (2012), Duct Tape and Card
These images document the development of a series of studio drawings using duct tape and card. I was interested in translating the straight lines and geometric forms of my recent drawings on paper into a more physical encounter in space using the studio wall and floor as a surface on which to 'draw'. Limited colour intervenes with the material forms, which were created by folding and placing the individual pieces of card to create particular, deliberate lines. The drawings above evolved through a series of fluid and playful engagements with the materials within a controlled space, developing from the initial monochromatic structures shown below.

Drawing with Light

Charley Peters, Untitled Light Drawing (2012), Cut Paper and Light
The above image documents one of a series of studio explorations using light and cut paper to generate drawings onto a wall. Repetitive straight parallel lines were cut into black card, which was then manipulated into different forms and lit from behind. The shape of the card (in this case bent into a cylinder), the width and depth of the cut lines, and the proximity of the light to the cuts generated different intensities and trajectories of light drawings onto a wall, something that will continue to be developed in the studio.
