Bad Behaviour Review

Here's an excerpt from a review of recent show Bad Behaviour written by Paul Luckraft, curator at Modern Art Oxford.

'...Also engaged in a formal play is Charley Peters, whose abstract drawings employ delicate lines, coloured tape and graphiteThe drawings have a real elegance, particularly the smaller line based pieces that appear as if they could be woodblock prints or etchings.  The larger tape piece in grey, black and white stripes which emanate out from the centre of the board in a sunburst affect is displayed propped against a wall, with a green light giving an artificial toxic glow behind it.  This piece in particular has echoes of Jim Lambie’s psychedelic, optically dizzying installations.  Another larger framed drawing in graphite suggests TV white noise or a night-time snowstorm. Here subtle lines, perhaps creases or folds, add a tension to the ‘all-over’ composition...'

Bad Behaviour at Brixton East

Charley Peters, Propagation of Disruption (2012), Gaffer Tape, Wood, Acrylic Paint, Light

Bad Behaviour at Brixton East is on for one more week. I have four pieces of work in the show including Propagation of Disruption (shown above), which was made on site and in response to the gallery space at Brixton East.

Work in Progress: Psychoparadoxa

Charley Peters, Psychoparadoxa (2012), Card & Graphite Powder

This is an early studio development of the Psychoparadoxa series of drawings, which explore spatiality and perspective through limited, instinctively drawn lines. The geometric 3-Dimensional construction - a drawing in space - is a physical interpretation of the linear movements suggested in the earlier ink drawings (examples below). The work depicted above is a maquette that will be developed in different materials over the coming weeks, focusing on creating fluid and dynamic single forms which move away from floor-based compositions and explore the physical space inhabited in the studio.

Sketches: Lines and Forms in Space

Charley Peters, Untitled Sketches (2012), Graphite on Paper

A new series of drawings exploring the spatial relationships of directional lines within the paper plane. Using a variety of media including graphite, tape, acrylic and graphite powder, depth and perspective is suggested through deliberately restrained drawing methods in these small works on paper.

Using powdered graphite on a variety of treated grounds (including glue, tape and spray fixative) irregular and unpredictable textures are created to introduce an extra level of experience to the drawings, encouraging a contrasting relationship between precise, controlled marks and randomly created areas of varying tonality.

Studio Works 12/07/12

Charley Peters, Untitled Sketches (2012), Graphite on Paper

Preliminary works on paper which explore repetitive lines in space. The lines were then manipulated by creating additional folded lines in the paper, disrupting the drawing surface and the direction of the lines trajectory.

Sketches

Charley Peters, Untitled Sketches (2012), Graphite on Black Paper

New drawings exploring repetitive graphite lines on black paper. On the dark surface the graphite drawings appears nearly invisible when viewing them directly from the front, but when seen from other viewing positions the lines catch the light with a metallic shimmer.

Sketches: Digital Drawings

Charley Peters, Untitled Digital Drawing (2012)

Charley Peters, Untitled Digital Drawing (2012)

These digital drawings are based on a series of intuitive drawings in sketchbooks that have been developing over the past months. Taking line drawings, such as those shown below, as a starting point, layers of colour and tone are built up digitally to mimic the process of painting over and around masked areas that has been explored in the studio recently.

Studio Views: Unique Inkjet 'Drawings'

Charley Peters, SEcretion (CMYK) (2012), Unique Inkjet Prints on Paper

Above are part of a series of 'drawings' made on an inkjet printer by scanning digitally drawn lines in cyan, magenta, yellow and black. The drawn lines are moved intuitively during the scanning process, causing movement and shifts in scale across the prints. Each colour is then printed systematically on top of the previous one, each output is unique and produced by chance.

Sketch

Charley Peters, Sketch (2012), Acrylic on Paper

An early developmental sketch, translating the geometric forms of my previous digital drawings into works in acrylic paint on paper. Working at a small scale, the intensity of detail from the earlier drawings had to be restrained, but this piece was a useful exercise in the exploration of possible future developments of the work and the testing of different materials.

Sketches: Line and Colour

Charley Peters, Sketches (2012), Digital Drawing
Examples of recent works in progress which develop earlier ink drawings into layered, coloured compositions. The original drawings from which the colour images are derived are shown below, the black ink lines forming a compositional structure on which additional areas of colour and different weights of lines are placed. These studio explorations remain in development and subsequent works in the series will be posted on Carbon Particles in the near future.
