Sketches: Line and Colour

Charley Peters, Sketches (2012), Digital Drawing
Examples of recent works in progress which develop earlier ink drawings into layered, coloured compositions. The original drawings from which the colour images are derived are shown below, the black ink lines forming a compositional structure on which additional areas of colour and different weights of lines are placed. These studio explorations remain in development and subsequent works in the series will be posted on Carbon Particles in the near future.

These images are examples of current studio explorations into generative drawing practices. Series of repeated four-sided forms are drawn intuitively over one another, the drawings in part create themselves through the processes employed.

The drawings below are created on Fabriano Pergamenata semi-transparent parchment paper, allowing lines from drawings placed underneath to be seen through the top sheet(s).

These small sketchbook drawings continue the development of the Psychoparadoxa series started in late 2011. In these drawings the black lines move dynamically across the paper plane, creating relationships between constituent elements which are both interconnected and independent.

Sketchbook: English National Ballet

Charley Peters, Drawing: English National Ballet (2012), Pencil on Paper

Today I was privileged enough to have access to draw dancers from the English National Ballet rehearsing for the production of Strictly Gershwin at the Coliseum Theatre, London. During their daily class I recorded the movement of the dancers, focusing on the space inhabited on the stage by both individual members of the company and also groups of dancers moving in harmony. At times the drawings concentrated on expressing the movements of the dancers' arms or feet during their warm up exercises and other pieces plotted the dancers as they traversed the stage, using the pages of my sketchbook to visually locate the dancers. The drawing process necessitated me to look at the dancers at all times, rather than the paper, and the drawings were revealed as finished sketches at the end of each exercise or rehearsed excerpt from the production. Each drawing lasted for the same duration as a particular exercise or sequence of movements. Some examples of the drawings produced today are below.

Studio Views: Psychoparadoxa, Developments in Studio Drawing

Charley Peters, Studio Drawings for Psychoparadoxa Series (2012), Yarn

My first studio day of 2012 led to developments of the Psychoparadoxa series of line drawings. The drawings were taken from the flat surface of the paper and constructed in yarn, suspended in a 3-dimensional space in the studio. The original works in ink suggested 'opened-out' perspective drawings and by executing them in the physical space of a room the relationship between background and foreground lines could be explored further. The yarn does not make contact with the studio wall at any point, but forms a geometric construction in space that marks out drawn lines in 3-dimensions.
